From Ideas to Action at St Damian’s Primary School

A Year 5 visit about turning ideas into action, learning to run a shop and finding the confidence to try again.

On Friday, 16 October 2026, I had the pleasure of visiting St Damian’s Primary School as a guest speaker, following an invitation from Ms Amber Bourke, a Year 5 teacher.

As part of their Term 4 learning, the Year 5 students are learning about business and marketing, including how to plan and run a shop. They are exploring how to research what customers want, choose and purchase goods, set prices, promote their products and make sales.

To connect classroom learning with real-world experience, the school invited parents to share their own business journeys and the lessons they have learned along the way.

Through my experience of building L2P — Learn to Play, I shared the journey of turning an idea into something real, including the challenges, mistakes and lessons along the way. I hoped to help the students recognise common mistakes and think about how to avoid them.

When things go wrong, try again.

Most importantly, I wanted to encourage them to keep going when things don’t work out. A mistake is an opportunity to learn, make changes and try again.

A special thank you to Ms Bourke for inviting me to share my experience with the students. It was a pleasure to support their Term 4 learning and encourage them to turn their ideas into action, learn from mistakes and keep trying when things don’t go to plan.

Thank you to the teachers and Year 5 students at St Damian’s for the opportunity to be part of their learning journey.
